Alocasia baginda ‘Dragon Scale’

Alocasia Dragon Scale is a compact jewel Alocasia known for its thick, deeply textured leaves. It is less forgiving than many common houseplants and requires excellent drainage, warmth, and high humidity.

Light

Provide bright indirect light. Avoid intense direct sunlight, which can bleach or scorch the textured leaves.

Too little light increases the risk of overwatering and weak growth.

Water

Allow the top one to two inches of soil to dry before watering. Thoroughly soak the soil and allow all excess water to drain.

Dragon Scale is particularly susceptible to root rot, so never allow the pot to sit in water.

Humidity

High humidity is strongly preferred. Aim for at least 60 percent humidity when possible.

Use a humidifier instead of repeatedly misting the leaves. Provide gentle airflow to reduce fungal problems.

Temperature

Keep between approximately 65 and 80°F. Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below approximately 60°F.

Soil and Repotting

Use a chunky, fast draining aroid mix containing coco coir or indoor potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite.

Choose a pot only slightly larger than the root system. An oversized container can retain too much moisture and encourage root rot.

Fertilizer

Feed once or twice monthly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Reduce or stop fertilizing during winter or dormancy.

Dormancy

Dragon Scale may slow down or lose leaves when temperatures or light levels decrease. Reduce watering during dormancy and resume normal care when new growth appears.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves usually indicate overwatering or root problems.

Curling leaves may indicate dry soil or insufficient humidity.

Brown edges may indicate low humidity, fertilizer buildup, or inconsistent watering.

Watch for spider mites, thrips, scale, fungus gnats, and mealybugs.

Pet Safety

Keep Alocasia Dragon Scale out of pets’ reach. Alocasias contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mouth irritation, drooling, difficulty swallowing, and vomiting if chewed.
